Blitzortung.org

Blitzortung.org provides real-time lightning and thunderstorm information on maps for various regions including the USA, UK, Australia, and more. It features a worldwide community collaborative lightning location network, offering both real-time maps and historical data.

Participants explored the technical workings of the Blitzortung lightning detection system, noting, "some of the distances from detectors to strike location are thousands of km." The main insight highlighted was the use of low-frequency radio detection and precise timing to locate lightning strikes over vast distances.

Another recurring theme in the discussion was the integration of lightning data into home automation systems. One user mentioned, "I use the Home Assistant integration to fetch this data," showcasing how this technology enhances safety by monitoring lightning activity in real-time.
